Hellhound

Despite “hound” being in the name, hellhounds share far more similarities with foxes, being a unique breed of canine fully domesticated by the Fireborne and native only to the Ashlands. Said to be graced by the Fire Dragon, they sport large, plated scales in shades ranging from red to ashen black across their form under a dense, insulating fur, typically matching the scales in color. Notably, their heads and tails lack fur, with the tail carrying an underlining of fluff. These hefty tails are used defensively but also act as a counterbalance for the small canine as it traverses the Ashland’s unsteady, mountainous terrain.

Few hellhounds are found in the wild, as most of the population lives among Fireborne clans. Despite odd appearances and intimidating red eyes, hellhounds are fiercely loyal to their owners, forming social bonds as pups. Well-trained hounds are hardworking companions: though not the best at tracking, they powerful, retractable claws that make light work of the tough, rocky ground to dig up precious ores within the mountains. They are also incredibly nimble, often small enough to easily navigate tight spaces. Hellhound vocalizations, typically chittering calls, are best described as a “cute, yipping heckle.”

Aside from the Ashlands, hellhounds can be found wherever their Fireborne owners take them along to. While the Northern and Eastern part of the realm is largely too cold for these canines to thrive, the Southern Reach itself has an agreeable climate that the hellhound may acclimate to without much trouble.
