In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
Abrum nods while tilting his fishing hat. "Ma'am,"
She curiously raises her brow, waiting for more.
"Ever since my old man taught me how to fish, I knew on that very day going forward what I wanted to be." He looks down at the aged planks and of the wagon and his weathered boots to prepare to continue telling his life in the swamp, his story. "The marine life down by the bayou never miss to amuse me. Where they hunt, lay their spawn, and migrate when they're ready."
"How long have you've been living by the swamps? Are you a jack?" The lady questions.
"I wouldn't describe myself as such, but the locals would say otherwise." He scoffs. "Me ma' and pa' made sure there weren't any 'strong influences' outside the the shack we lived in until I turned eighteen. They were overbearing, but I don't blame 'em knowing the nature of the locals. We kept to ourselves getting by from the fish and fauna the swamp provided. Ma' would take care of both pa' and I, especially we had appropriate clothing to traverse the shallow and pa' would teach me how to catch game and to not be wasteful of what we earned and in time. Fishin' was top priority so we can sustain ourselves daily. Any spare time would be trading, but me pa' never let them near our home." Abrum recalling the amount of times his father was out overnight and at times the next day with all sorts of goods and trinkets, but those memories were far and between.
She gives a reassuring smile, "It must of been hard growing up. I doesn't sound like you had any kind of childhood."
"The fish kept me company," He smiles. "It may have been a struggle, but it builds character, I was told." He relieves a sigh. "Nonetheless, once I turned eighteen and became independent, I started traveling beyond the swamp and into deeper trenches. All sorts of aquatic life I had no idea existed. From the coastlines of the Reach to the rivers inland. It furthered my aspirations as a fisherman, hoping to see more freaky things lurking in or near the waters." Abrum does a wiggling commotion with his fingers, alluding to bait wriggling in the mud. "One time during my routine trip to the north of The Wall to trade, I've heard some commotion from the Duch locals. They mentioned somthin' about a 'Misty Isles' inhabiting a bizarre fog blanketing the region with unsettling stories and even more bizarre marine life."
"Oh I'm sure they were just teasing you, don't worry too much about any of the rumors about those islands." She chuckles.
"Oh, but I think otherwise. I want to believe the strange things the locals were describin'. I really do want to go there some day to catch some game. But due to how little gold I'm makin' right now, I doubt I'll visit them isles. Also, those sailors passing off the islands as 'unremarkable', oh I'll tell you what-" He hesitates from finishing the statement about the sailors before he would scare off the lady, "'Excuse my manners."
She slowly shakes her head with a smirk, "Those sailors really got under your skin, huh?"
"It was a one time thing. I doubt they remember me from all the drinking they were getting themselves into back at Katrinsa. Who knows what in the world they were doing over there." Abrum composes. "Other than that, I'm making sure to save enough gold to go beyond The Wall and find the closest port to catch a boat to the Misty's." He looks up in hopes of visiting Mist Isles. He dreams the day of going to the region in hopes to be the top angler, unaware of what fate has to offer.
