In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

I do not answer straight away.

“Not nervous,” I say after a moment. “Just thinking.”

My eyes drift over the plains, then back to her.

“I’m from the Midlands. Grew up in the Valkian Realm. Trade towns, busy streets. People chasing coin like it’s the only thing that matters. I learned how to deal with that. Watch people. Listen more than I speak.”

“My father wasn’t around.Never knew him. Just my mother.”

“She got sick when I was younger. Morsanguis. Started with a cough. By the time anyone realised what it was, it had already taken too much out of her.”

My expression doesnt change.

“They burned her after. Said it was the proper way. I stayed there a while after, but… there wasn’t anything left for me. Same people. Same talk. Nothing changes.”

“Then word started spreading. About this place. The Southern Reach. Empty settlements. People gone without a trace. New land opening up.”

“Most hear that and think opportunity. I hear it and think something caused it.”

I look back at her.

“Either way, it’s a place where things aren’t already decided for you. No history tying you down yet. Just pure risk”

“I’d rather deal with something real, even if it’s dangerous, than stay somewhere thats always predictable.”

“So I came to see it for myself. And decide what comes next.”

Hello, at this moment I'm afraid I'm going to have to deny the application

  1. Is below our required word limit (225, we require 250 words),
  2. Is written in first person,
  3. Uses a skin for a relatively recognizable character from another piece of media (Isaac from Netflix's Castlavania),
  4. Has a name for the character which is the same as your username.

While our Roleplay Standards subsection under our Rules can be long, it details certain expectations around IC & OOC separation, including: "Try to adopt a 3rd-person voice 'She, Him, Character-Name' rather than a 1st-person voice “I, Me” in a scene." While the integration of Avalore's lore is appreciated, the rest of the application leaves me unclear on if this is intended to be some sort of self-insert or just a character's name sharing a similar form to your username. The skin is also very visibly an iconic character from another piece of media, which I'd request be either discarded or edited to lessen the resemblance should you choose to re-apply.

Finally, the written section itself does not meet our wordcount requirement. You're welcomed to re-apply at any time, but if you do, I'm going to have to ask that the application be in third person, meet the word requirement, and not share your username. You're welcome to modify the concept otherwise.
