In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
Pepper looked over the woman, not much taller than the man beside him, himself. "Sari, I don't have much coin. OH, mi get we-yu a se. I wander from the lacklands of the marsh. The less fortunate folk that gamble they earnings from the east." His accent was heavy handed, struggling to swap between the more notable common and southern twang of tongue. However, he was more than capable when it came to understanding others, Pepper was doing his best to be accommodating for the woman. Hoping she'd have an easier time of listening to him than most do, it didn't help that he had an improper lexicon.
Growing up in the rigid ideology of men and women who split tongue between Elvish and Great-speak, however he never personally had the ears for Ancient tongue. He did however do wonderfully in the creativity it took to get his point across. "Yah, I came out here to get away from the swamps. Nothing worth earning or winning in the south of the jacks, my papa says often to me' fore he on and off to the Reach's mountains."
Pepper sat further back onto the wagon's seat, the constant rumbling bringing a comforting feeling to him.
"I've done met and seen many great-ling, bigger than the wagon I promise to ya, they don't take none but one strong thump to up and tumble it. Some strength like that, its what I want the most. But I'm not a tree kisser, I'd not find mi-self flown me wings to a spirit. - I'm gonna find-a great purpose, greater than any of them Fire-borne, out in those ash-wastes. Taking and killing as they please, no culture beyond a good opportunity. But maybe that don't make-em any less different than the Valkyians and dey coin. 'that MAY DE sun SHINE ON YOU, nonsense.'"
He'd squint at the sun's brightening, the carriage's canvas welcoming the rays with each over-sized rock. "But really, I think I just wanna find a GOOD place to call home, a place to raise me OWN family. Get a drink, ain't that the dream."
As the presence of her question died off, he thought about his time traveling, visiting the wall, he was always impressed by its height. Never doubting how it could have taken decades to construct, he heard tales of it being older than even his generation of family. Aware of the struggles and pains it may have taken to simply be. Not to mention the constant Aedall significant annoyance, raiding merchants that flew his side of the wall's coop. In his mind now, he stayed ever warry of finding himself under subjugation to King-Emperor Rayan IV, and his formal decree to populate the wall with certain criminals, from certain sentences. But that's what came with being a Walljack, a certain person with resilience and tongue that could be ever so un-serious. Albeit It was never an excuse for him to remain so arrogant and down-right ignorant.
But much like any person with a far more lack-luster goal, he was ever wanting to meet a Fey-touched person. Hearing an interesting tale of their wonderful eyes, despite all of the bad luck he's been taught to assume from them. Pepper figured that tales can't be the only thing in the world worth writing about, some of these things should have esoteric truth to them.
A long moment of respite dwindled, his original goal of owning a tavern returned. Flooding his mind with possibility and opportunity, per-chance was it fate. Or just manifested destiny. Thoughts of The Spire, how it can impact his life, the drastic change in scenery, so many uncontested factors that built a strong foundation for the future, Pepper's future. It was his family he's left behind after-all, when they split direction. His father, heading to the mountains to give aid toward the Stone-runners, his mother falling helplessly in love with a Falstoner from The Velveteen Voyager who preached found family being indisputable proof of affection, alongside the trade for wealth and riches. Pepper found himself hopeful, that if even those who've lived such large portions of their lives can find peace anew, maybe he could too. Albeit starting alone.
