In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Grimshaw considered the woman's question, having spent the trip so far watching the world go by and humming quietly beneath her breath. Gently tilting her head, some of her hair falling down over her face, but she tucked it back behind her ear, closing her eyes a moment as memories flooded into her mind.

Born as she was to her greatling mother, all she’d begun knowing was the snow and the wind in the mountains of Erdehim. Her birth was at the start of the harshest time for her clansmen- the start of winter, SkyBright.  Whether this was omen or blessing was further confused by the strangeness of her eyes and the dots upon her hands and feet that marked her from birth as fay-touched. She’d learn later, her mother had been a bodyguard for a northern noble, and had travelled far from home accompanying them with the promise of plenty to bring back to her home. Both crowns and stories a plenty to share at the clans gatherings.

While the noble had a private rendezvous, her mother had strayed to explore the nearby area, assured her charge would be safe for the meantime and would not wish to be disturbed. Where she first saw the Falstoners passing through, although she wouldn’t go into detail when asked by her daughter- she mentioned one in particular with a gentle smile and scales like Grimshaw’s own who charmed her in their own native tongue, she hadn’t imagined a one night stand with such a stranger would have her returning home from her work with a surprise gift in tow.

Her childhood was no different to most other Greatlings, though she was viewed strangely for the oddness that marked her as different- the close knit community prevented her from ever feeling truly alone. They’d play chasing each other through the snow, throwing rocks and wrestling, spending evenings listening to their elders recount ancient stories. Most of her fellow youngsters would lose interest at the less exciting tales, but Grimshaw kept rapt attention- even finding her interest peaked by the rumours of disappearances in the lands to the south.

Wanderlust didn’t take her yet, however, years passed as she learnt to hunt, to defend herself. She found herself more distracted than her peers, but faithfully upheld her duties to the clan and her fellows. It was only when a passing caravan of Velveteen Voyagers encountered trouble moving through the mountains pursuing trade into the empire of Valkia and had to be assisted by the clan, that her interest began to grow. Seeing those like herself, some touched by the fay- some not. Smaller, so much smaller, but they were friendly, and upon seeing her with traits like their own- offered to briefly teach her about their culture while they were staying nearby.

The festivals, the different places they travelled, the freedom to come and go with the wind- After a few rounds of Flabber-Fae, the young woman was enraptured. Yearning to learn more about the rest of the world, a world these people had seen. Perhaps a part of a long buried wish to meet the one who sired her became part of it, but it was a piece she would not acknowledge if so.

Although it hurt her heart, she ended up bidding farewell to her home, vowing she would return with treasure and stories much like her mother had done, though she may be gone for a much longer time. At the ripe age of twenty, she set out into the Valkian realm. Picking up the common tongue as she went, she roamed with her Voyager friends for a good while, being taught the basics of trade and the most common scams to avoid. She kept to her furs, which led to issues as she would often overheat and need her friends’ fussing to prevent serious harm, but she was cheerful and welcoming to the new experiences, learning her limits. They passed through Auclair, wines being bartered and sold, before heading to Mariza for the caravan's main trading opportunities. Silks, jewels, wines, spices, she’d never before seen so much in one place. Upon the others intending to head back to the Steppe- she instead chose to linger, thanking them for their companionship, knowledge and help profusely. Out of her element as a quieter soul in the bustling city, she sought opportunity- only to stumble upon rumours of adventures to the mysterious Spire further south, and alongside the high tensions left by the wars upon the western continent through the Long Winter and the bloody success of the Odokhi when come to treasure despite not gaining territory, found herself boarding a ship to the small upcoming settlement instead of risking the ocean blues.

Perhaps she would find answers that would bring her satisfaction, stories, mysteries and treasures to share with those she left behind. Or perhaps she would find comfortable belonging, something more precious than any gold or trinket. Her eyes opened, gentle silver meeting the womans own as she smiled softly, not detailing it all to the stranger, but stating a simple- “For the adventure.” in answer to her question.

Character Name:  Grimshaw

Character Race:  Half Fey-Touched / Half Greatling

Character Age: 22

 Brief Physical Description:

Grimshaw is a half-Greatling that reaches the height of six foot and seven inches, one of the smallest able to be found despite still towering over many- her skin a pale faintly peach colour that would have her blending into the snow if not for the coal black of her long straight hair. This fell to just below her hips, but she’d often keep it tied into a simple braid to prevent it from getting in her way, though some always managed to sneak loose and hang in front of her face or catch on the deep blue horns that curved back from her temples. Sometimes she’d style it like this purposely, as her face had sign of what she was unsure of being her blessing or curse- solid silver eyes from her fay-touched heritage, her eyes always tilted downwards giving her a consistently sad expression.

Beneath the blue dyed furs she preferred that kept the majority of her body hidden from view and from the cold of her home- patches of scales would adorn her arms and legs, with the end of each limb decorated in delicate blue dots that marked the fay that had adorned her to be from the wetlands.
