Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

Olivier was shaken from her reverie with a small start, and she turned her head toward the stranger. Huh- what? What had she asked? Her mind was slow to turn, almost fighting to return to the clouds she'd just been in, the homesickness nibbling at her insides. This was not her first time away from ‘home,’ though it was the first that strayed quite so far; The first that promised to be almost permanent. The wobble of the wagon had her aching for the familiar caravans roaming betwixt the scattered Falstoner communities, the many long days spent on busy paths. Singing, exchanging tricks and trinkets amongst the neighbors while they talked...
With that nibble of anxiety came the tingle of excitement, though. Or perhaps they were one and the same. Latching onto the woman’s question, Olivier chose to make it more of the latter than the former. She hugged her lute to her chest, brushing fingertips along the fine carvings that spanned across what was perhaps her most prized possession at this point, and donned a bright smile one far more confident than she felt. The instrument was her sole piece of her community all the way out here, and she held fast to it as though it lent her strength.
“Figured it was time to spread my wings, so to speak. I am off to see the world while I can.” After all, it was only right that a young adult take a trip and expand her horizons before settling into herself! Sure. Yes. That was it.
