Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

I look around with some sadness, and with eyes full of nostalgia, I look back at the old woman.
”When I was just a child, my parents died in a fight between friends outside a tavern. After that, I lived as a sailor’s apprentice in a small lighthouse in the village. I learned everything about the sea and the waves and sails became my new family. However, there was something in my life and in that damn town that didn’t quite fit. I ran away.”
The old lady was silent and listened attentively.
“I hid among powder bags of a small ship that was heading to distant lands. I remember seeing the Mist Islands disappear into the fog as the ship set sail. I didn’t even know where I would end up.
Suddenly I’m here, starting a new life. I’m scared, I’ll be honest. But I know perfectly well that I will become a proper man and sailor. I’m a survivor so I’ll be good.”
