The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
"I came here from Marionsport; you might not know, but our rite of passage gives us a choice: trekking our island, or building a boat and sailing off into the mist, to find our fate.
I chose the latter. We are supposed to return after a while, but I am ashamed to admit that, in all my meandering, I have not yet found something worth sharing back home.
That is why i came to the Reach.
And... well, it's a long shot, but, have you ever met someone by the name of Aedern? or Millie? they were, are, my parents; one day they sailed away from shore and just... disappeared, not one soul in our community could make sense of it, I was just a few months old, sailing togheter was just too dangerous, they must have had a reason to; that is why I chose to sail. Maybe one day I'll return to my port, with my parents safe and sound.
