Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum - please make sure to include some references to our lore in your response!)

"Well, I guess I needed a new start. Was a farmer back in my homeland, Huerlin, before everyones’ crops kept failing. Things got rough when the famines started. Those damn Solas knights started raiding our homes for food, saying we deserved to starve for our "demon worship," no clue what a demon even is. Eventually things got so bad that the Heurlians started a rebellion, things were too dangerous to stay. I’ve got some Fey-touched friends that were going back to Fallstone, had some relatives or something with a big farm, and I'm hoping to join them. Heard Fallstone was nice and peaceful, like my home once was. And, well, to be completely honest, I've got a bit of a tongue for alcohol, and heard the Reach's got the best drinks in the lands."

"Oh my, that sounds awful," the elderly woman replied. "I don't think I've ever heard of Heurlin."

"Well, I, um, most haven't. It's far away. Yes, very far. Wanted to get as far away from it as possible."

Brief Physical Description: Azariah is a slightly out of shape 44 year old man. He’s somewhat muscular from his years of farmwork, but has a small beer belly due to his alcoholism. He is 5’8”, tan, has short brown hair, and blue eyes.

Your application is looking good, I just wanted to touch on a few things. We allow some wiggle room for backstory lore contributions like this, but would just like to ensure that it is understood that these things would not be large-scale in our setting (e.g. Huerlin being small is good!); likewise with the Solas Knights you have written. Is it agreeable to you to that they would be a local group of knights as opposed to a large-scale faction?

Similarly, we do not have demons at this time in our lore, so would it be agreeable to you that the 'demons' in your characters backstory were more in the realm of folklore/perceived as evil spirits as opposed to being actual literal demonic entities with magic and the like? Alternatively, we do have undead (called 'necrophages') that you can view in our bestiary here for something in a similar vein.

One other question would just be, where is Huerlin within our setting?

Hi Charybdis, I probably should've clarified in my original post, but my character was lying to the elderly woman. He made up Heurlin & everything else because his actual reason for going to the Reach is that he was in debt to a criminal group because of he kept borrowing more and more money to fuel his alcholism, and he had to flee his homeland before they killed him. I tried to hint a bit at him lying with the last line but I didn't want to outright state it. The only thing he wasn't lying about was knowing a group of Fey-touched that went back to live in Fallstone.
