In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum - please make sure to include some references to our lore in your response!)
Seated neatly in the corner across from the woman is a narrow man, hiding beneath an oversized coat. He takes note of her with a twitch of his bony hand, but for several long moments he's quiet, as though the question might pass should he ignore it long enough. The awkward silence is not lost on him— he visibly grows more uncomfortable the longer she's expectant.
"I'm... looking for someone," he chokes up eventually. And then he lapses into silence again.
This time, his expression twitches. He's distant, not rude. He sighs as though greatly put upon, and closes the silence himself. "Well... that's not entirely true. Familial duties, cultural reasons, such things— searching for a particular someone is truly the least of them. I've come to collect my inheritance. My father left on a pilgrimage of his own looking for the phoenix when I was young, a herd of his finest steed with him. I'm from the steppe, see. My family has been with horses forever."
"He never came back after that, and made home here in the Reach. He found meager success as a stable master, and then he passed and his stables passed down to my mother. She didn't care much for leaving Fallstone, so it sat unattended, and then she passed as well, and it sat unattended a little longer until now that I'm ready to come and take it. I've no clue what's left of it, of course— it's been rotting for the better part of fifteen years now. I wouldn't be shocked if it's barely more than an empty plot of land now."
"I don't figure he ever found that bird, either, else he wouldn't have settled." He looks bleak.
"I was close to my mother, and to the steppe, so it's taken me a couple of years to be ready to leave that place. But here I am now... it's not common folk of mine stay still for too long, anyway."
The man peers out of the back of the carriage, watching the hills disappear behind them. He's contemplative for a while, allowing yet another long pause, not so tense this time. "I lied when I said searching for someone was insignificant," he admits, not meeting her gaze again. "Really I never would have made this journey if I hadn't known this to be where someone I care for hails from. Someone I met only once, unexpectedly, and who never returned to the steppe again. Maybe I'll encounter him here."
"Seems like every significant figure and circumstance in my life is pulling me to the Reach, so it must be fate, right?"
