In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum - please make sure to include some references to our lore in your response!)
Cato wouldn't say he's nervous, if anything the prospect of a new life excites him. He was always an outcast in his own home even among the Fey-Touched, though the Greatlings were more willing to accept him. He did spend a lot of time with the giant people neighboring him, and they taught him a great many things, their language among them. After some mulling over the question, the young man speaks up; "Why? Well... somebody has to study the new lands, right? All kinds of things have to be documented, researched, and filed away in a library." As the last words leave his mouth, he turns his gaze to the fields extending behind the moving wagon. Cato knew deep in his mind that he was just putting up a wall between himself and the old woman as he does with almost everyone he meets. Fallstone held little opportunity for a man like him and his odd appearance had little to do with it. What would he do, write almanacs his entire life? Become a translator for the Greatling traders? These could offer him a peaceful life, sure, but Cato wanted more. He held no great ambitions, but he wanted answers. Cato was a scholar, not a farmer or a warrior, in spite of his past. However, those are secrets he only speaks on Fairie's Eve.
His secrets were safe enough in his mind. His thoughts wander to them-- about how the Fey-Touched woman who raised him was not his real mother. She always attributed his arrival to the Fey but she would be wrong. Though he was just a toddler, he has glimpses of the truth tucked away in his subconscious. Black hair, just like his, belonging to a man that hadn't bathed in weeks and was dressed in rags. It was a memory dangling upon the edge of his mind, always threatening to sink into the abyss of forgetfulness, but he held onto it. Cato wanted answers. That was why he became a scholar to begin with.

Character Name: Cato Corvus
Character Race: Human
Character Age: 20
Brief Physical Description: Cato is of average build and height for his kind, standing at five-ten. He does maintain his body with regular exercise. It is a habit all but beat into him as a teenager, when he made clear his intentions of leaving Fallstone. He is not a brute of a man, but his upbringing as a farmhand led to him having a hardy constitution, far from the shriveled-up husks many scholars are. His hair is a deep black, and he almost always has a faintly-visible shadow where his facial hair would be. As he lived in the wild and traveled often, there was no telling when he would come across those who bode ill. Cato has no visible markings, aside from insignificant scars from the odd scuffle in his travels.
