In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)?
"It's something new - I mean, what's happening around the Spire right now. It feels like this place has something for everyone - or at least that's how everyone's been describing it, so I thought there'd be something for me to do here. The Spire overlooks the sea, right? I've always been fascinated by ships - not even the travel, more so the construction - and I didn't want to stay in Fallstone when I could be doing something more... more. You know? So I guess I'm here now."
Her tone of voice doesn't show any hint of offense towards her life back home, just the youthful pursuit of excitement - Fallstone isn't exactly known for its thrills, save for the celebrations of Faerie's Eve. Most of her life was spent like any other Falstoner deeply involved with the caravans - trudging along the trails of the Faded Steppe, with occasional breaks. She had some distant relatives in one of the shore-side towns, but she only got to visit them a few times as a kid. There, she'd spend most of her time watching the fishing boats come and go, carefully studying every detail - at least as much as she could without ever getting up close. One time though, she saw something different; a trade ship, although which flag it swam under escapes her. She watched as crates of crops were brought in, and goods she'd never seen before brought out. Her parents bought her a souvenir; a picture book of various ships. Lyssa still has it with her; well worn pages can be heard crinkling at the bottom of her bag.
"Why didn't you stay in one of the Valkian cities, then?" - the woman asks. - "You could've learned a thing or two from them - they've got ships all figured out."
"I tried! But it just... didn't work out. It was totally packed, and admittedly, it made me a little uneasy. It's not my kind of place - and it doesn't feel like it's got a place for me either. I do owe one thing to the experience, though! I probably wouldn't have heard about the Reach back home."
Lyssa turns around and gazes away for a second. - "Even the sky is so different than on the Steppe... and everything is so lush and colorful, too. I'm really far from home now, aren't I? It's a bit scary! But it's the good kind of scary. Gets you excited to get to work. I think that's a good sign."
