In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium. Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)
“Please, guide me towards the light in my travels, and keep me from harm.”
With those words, the scaled woman tossed the rock into the blaze, watching as the flames licked up the sides of the stone before fully igniting it. She spared only a few seconds more before turning swiftly on her heel away from the large skull, starting her trek back home for the last time.
Isabis clutched the stone tightly between her fingers as she recalled the memory. What was once an ordinary rock from her homeland now represented something meaningful—a symbol of what she was leaving behind and the new beginnings ahead of her. She gently opened a small pouch tied around her waist to drop the rock inside, securing it safely to her side. Before she could reminisce more, a warbled voice pulled her from her thoughts.
“—Why have you come to the Reach?” Solid slate grey eyes flick over to the woman who’d spoken to scrutinize her. Strained silence lingered in the air before Isabis parted her lips to speak.
“…For knowledge.” She stated, her tone plain. Her thumb moved to her arm to brush over the thick black scales that encrusted the skin underneath. That was the simple answer. “There aren’t many physicians where I’m from—up in the Ashlands.” She shifted her hands upwards to gesture around her, trying to highlight the unfamiliar terrain wordlessly. “The Bastion forges fighters, not healers. Those with limited medical knowledge choose to stay with what they know: the basics. Few pursue a dragon’s level of wisdom.” Isabis’ eyes locked with the older woman’s in an intense display, almost as if the prolonged eye contact would hammer down her point. “So naturally, when adventures—who all came and went—prattled on about… fresh developments around the Reach; to say it piqued my interest is almost an understatement.” Her hand slithered down to meet the side of her leather pouch, and she patted it for good measure. “I’m hoping this escapade to the South can offer me both the skills I’m seeking, and bountiful experiences.”
Once Isabis finished speaking, she offered a curt nod before her gaze dropped to the wooden floor of the wagon and remained there. She didn’t care to gauge the woman’s expression this time–the fiery sensation engraved deep within her replaced any want or care for external validation, and it burned bright.
