In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

With a small huff, the human child looks away and leans onto the back of the wagon, resting her cheek upon her arm that lays atop the wagon gate.“ ‘Cause my dad heard this was a good and safe place to send me,” she pauses, the mixed emotions running through her little head causing her to stop for just a moment, “uncertain danger back at home”. Of course the older lady was right, she was greatly anxious from the large wave of unknown swallowing up her life and it showed. From no familiar faces or spaces to the lack of knowing the goings on at her home and family, she caught herself from crying in front of the older lady and any others within the wagon. Wiping away any evidence of tears, she continued before the lady could ask, “Parents said times are getting rougher in the North, and that they don't want me to have to struggle through another winter. I just wish I didn’t have to go alone”. She ran her fingers through her dark brunette hair, “We even cut my hair shorter in concern for how much warmer it may be here…”. Recognizing there were no wagons behind them, the little one slips off her eyepatch. Her contrasting eyes of green and brown glittering in the sunlight for none to see. “I’m scared but also excited…” she speaks out more quietly, unsure if that was her continuing to respond to the stranger, or simply her speaking her thoughts. Clutching her eyepatch, she was not only overwhelmed by anxiety, but also by excitement and thrill of exploring a new land and seeing new faces. Only for a little bit of guilt to also tag along in the slurry of mixed emotions. Looking out into the plains, she recalls the stories her mother told her of the Divine Gardeners. While she had no hate for snow, and actually was still quite fond of it, she couldn’t help but be more curious about the natural world. She was much more fond of her small village within the woods than the fortresses of the North. Looking back to the older lady with one eye shut, “Do you think it possible to find a Wild Gardener here?” she asks before resuming her previous position. “Perhaps by learning from them, I could help my home.” With a comforting hand on her back from the stranger, she realizes how tired she is from the emotions brought up through conversation. Pulling  her hood up and over her head to shield her from the sunlight as she closes her eyes. The rhythmic hoofbeats and light wind gusts lulling her to sleep.
