Read the following prompt:

The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.

“Nervous?”

You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.

“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.

“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”

How do you respond (in character)? (150 words minimum)

—Cedar regards the old woman a moment before responding, considering his words. "Opportunity, like the rest of us I suppose. Free air, the chance to make something of myself. To make a family blade when the time comes." Cedar chuckles before continuing "Only opportunities back home for me were as tavern bouncers. Didn't want to be glassed by some ornery drunk." He grimaces "Little else for the fifth son. Too late for the land or the schooling. My brother will get Pa's land and the family blade when the time comes. All I got was some training from Pa, he wanted to be sure I wouldn't shame him should the need arise. I wanted to do more than be one of his laborers, besides, the house was getting cramped with him starting a family with his new bride." Cedar takes a long breath of the Reach air "So I made sure to help them with the seeding and calving before making my way south. Paid to join the caravan with some of the little coin I had saved. Timed it perfectly, won't be breaking my back harvesting taters come midsummer." He smiles to the old woman "Sound like you've been here a few times. Any advice for my first? We have more than enough time."
