In-Character Read the following prompt, The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands. “Nervous?” You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes. “I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in. “Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?” How do you respond (in character)? Response:
I blink and refocus, offering the older woman a small, genuine smile. There’s something familiar in her gaze—an understanding, the kind only earned through years of hard living.
“Nervous?” I repeat, shaking my head slightly. “No, ma’am, not nervous. Not in the way you mean.” I glance out at the Southern Reach, where the tall grass rolls like waves under the wide, open sky. “It’s strange, though, being on this side of a journey. For years, I was the one watching folks set out, wondering if I’d ever have a reason to do the same.”
I shift my weight slightly as the wagon jostles over uneven ground. “I was raised near the old borderlands, out past the Ashen Fells where the soil’s still stubborn from the wars long before my time. My folks were healers—humble folk who never turned away a stranger in need. When the Blightwinds came, they did what they could, but sickness doesn’t care about kindness.” My fingers brush absently over the worn leather strap of my satchel. “I buried them near the willow grove behind our home. After that, there wasn’t much reason to stay.”
I glance back at her, offering a quiet, almost self-conscious chuckle. “I suppose I could’ve gone anywhere, but the Reach calls to folk like me. People trying to build something better, something lasting. If I can help even a handful of them—lend my hands, my heart—then that’s reason enough to be here.”
I nod toward the horizon. “No, ma’am, I’m not nervous. I’m ready.”
