Prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
-
Response:
There was a stillness in the younger woman, even as the wagon teetered back and forth between the boundaries of the path. Through long and drooping bangs she peered down to the elder, lips pursuing before her admittance. “No,” was all she said, at first.
In an off beat, between the sound of hooves, the young stranger elaborated further, “Not nervous, and it’s not my first time either. I lived further north, towards the Wall.”
“Oh,” while well-meaning, the older woman gave a little shrug of her shoulders, or what movement she was allowed in the crowded transport. “The Wall, hm?”
There was a huff, before the younger woman indulged in the conversation again. “The Wall, yeah. I lived near it.”
“Well, would it be silly of me to ask if you ever saw the Duchy of Rulan?”
“Hah,” the younger of the two huffed out in amusement. “Not when they put up a wall to keep me out.” One of her hands flexed, before going to fix the bandages that wrapped both her hands. It wasn’t out of injury, though. “Not like there’s much to see there anyways, flowers an’ stones are already out in the swamps.”
As the older woman watched, she continued to question, “Do they wish to keep you out of the swamps now?” Her head tilted, keeping her focus on the conversation rather than the chatter around them.
“Probably,” the Walljack admitted. Her shoulders lifted up into a shrug as still found herself talking. “Not why I’m here, though. Game dried up closer to the Wall.”
“Game? Oh, dear, you’re a hunter?”
“I’m a fowler, yeah.” The younger woman stopped fiddling with her hands, to let them rest back in her lap. Her head tilted back, eyes shutting. “I followed ‘em down south and they dwindled. Hardly anythin’ worth a trap or arrow by Albern Crossing, ‘specially with all the other hunters passin’ through.” There was a pause, before she opened one eye to peer down at the old stranger. “Or maybe my luck’s run out.”
