In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character):
Nergui flashed a smile, the corners of her mouth tugged in a way to reveal the subtle tusks in her lower jaw and her brows knitted upwards in a way to try and appear at ease… But the twitch of her thick ginger brows and the uneasy smile was more than enough to reveal the giantess’ true feelings.
“Me? Nervous? Nah, I grew up on the cusp of the Ashlands, I eat beasts twice my size for breakfast… literally.” Nergui reassured the woman... To which the kindly old lady would reach out and rest her wrinkled fingers to Nergui's arm, without a word. The light show of comradery was enough to ease the tension in the half-blood’s stiff spine and tightly coiled muscles. Her feet slid across the wooden floor, careful to give the woman her space.
“Going into any unknown can be scary. No matter how mundane or epic the journey, young one,” the elderly human retorted.
Nergui reached her blackened fingers to scratch along her scaled cheek and hummed reluctantly in agreement.
“Tell me, Dear… Why are you going to the Reach?”
It was a simple question, but the question sent her heart thudding in her chest, “To start fresh-” Nergui paused when she saw the woman give her a small finger waggle.
“You can do better than that, Missy.”
“Nergui.” She introduced and smiled. This little woman reminded her of her mother before she passed, “I truly do want a fresh start though... A few years ago a disease gripped my home. Many left to avoid the sickness or died in their homes, but I am the last soul to leave that village.”
The woman’s expression creased with sympathy as Nergui spoke, “Was it…” She leaned in, hand cusped as if the shake of the wagon wasn’t enough to cover her voice when she whispered, “The Scarlet Plague?”
“I… Don’t think so.” Nergui admitted, her voice slow and low. She leaned back against the wagon’s wooden wall, “I’ve heard Sc- uh.. The disease has a mist that comes out from the mouth that tints the air. My parents, nor others in the village showed signs of that. The doctor thought it was Gagwyrm before he passed as well…” Nergui was quiet for a moment, then a low chortle snuck past her lips. She folded her arms over her chest and furrowed her brows, “ Sorry. I was just-... well… So the first time I heard of it was from Mistan sailors. Bastard nearly convinced me my sea-sickness was Scarlet Plague.” She grumbled, the vision of that Arsa Sidhe sailor trying to quarantine her while spouting that her red eyes and lightheaded nausea was an effect of some deadly disease rather than discomfort from a swaying boat.
“I digress, I left once there was no one left.” Nergui snapped back into focus, “It was my first time being in the Ashlands proper-.”
“You weren’t in the Ashlands?” The lady asked with curiosity. Nergui’s lips tightened and her brows rose as she leaned back. Living beyond the western side of the Serpent’s Tongue Pass was not a choice someone made; It was a consequence assigned. Albeit, one decided before her birth. Her home held a stigma by other Ashlanders regardless.
“I was.” She blurted quickly, “I just lived very close to the northern edge, near the tundra. So it was pretty isolated… I had never seen a town as big as Sulferm at the time, but it paled next to the size of the ocean.,” She chirped with a child-like glee at the memory of the vast rippling waters. Hundreds of homes and businesses crowding the ash-stone streets. To any well travelled individual, Sulferm was by no means a city. It was meager in comparison to the Spire’s winding cobbled businesses that surround the sky-shattering relic.
“I worked in Sulferm as a day-laborer. I’d load ships, bring in goods to the shops, and various other jobs. I’d listen to the talk of the sailors and the places that they had been and were going to... I wanted a bite of that. And when I heard of the Spire from one of the local trade ships, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. A place as far from my village as a boat will take me-” And away from the stigma of being a Tundra Wanderer “- it felt like the perfect adventure.”
