In-Character

Read the following prompt:

The sound of clinking glasses and idle chatter welcome you in as you find yourself stepping into The Full Cask. An older man with a full mustache and warm smile beckons you over to the bar he's tending. His gazes washes over you, a glint of some knowing look shining in his eyes. As you sit, his voice rumbles out:

"Hello there stranger! What can I get for you?"

After you order, he continues to make small talk. "You must be a newcomer. I'm Maarten, glad to meet you." He says with a certain kindness in his tone.

"Tell me, what brings you to the Spire?"

How do you respond (in character)(250 word minimum - please make sure to include at least three references to our lore in your response, with two coming from different pages in the Compendium.  Two of the three selected should also be in-depth, avoid simply name-dropping lore terms. Tie the terms into your character's backstory. Why are they important to them?)

Usage of AI to generate, modify or translate the writing on your application will result in denial of your whitelist. There will be no chance to re-apply afterwards.

Your Response:

Arno does not answer immediately. He rolls the glass beneath his palm, watching the drink climb the side and settle again. His coat has slipped slightly off one shoulder, but he leaves it there. Through the window, the Spire cuts into the sky, pale and enormous. He has been trying not to stare at it since he came in.

"I wanted to see somewhere else, Maarten." He pauses, then gives the smallest shake of his head. "That's not quite right. I wanted to get out." He takes a drink, his mouth twisting briefly at the taste. "South gets repetitive. Water, mud, more water. You get used to it, though. That's the dangerous bit. After a while you stop noticing what would have bothered you before."

His thumb worries at a nick in the glass as his gaze drifts toward the door, then the windows, then back to the bar. "I grew up south of the Wall. Swamp country. You learn which ground is lying to you, which water won't leave you sick, which people smile because they're friendly and which ones smile because they aren't." He looks down at his drink. "My people have a saying. Don't remember it exactly. Something about a frog leaving the pond and finding out the whole world is wet. Seems about right."

He settles deeper into the stool, crooked as ever. "I suppose I got tired of ending up where I started." The words come easily enough. The next ones do not. "There was something I was meant to be good at. Seeing things. Finding the way through when everyone else is looking at the wall. I thought I had that sort of thing in me." He stops there, leaving the rest unsaid. "I've spent enough time finding out what I'm bad at. Thought I'd give the other side a chance."

He lifts his drink again but does not immediately drink from it. The tower remains outside, patient and ridiculous and far too large. "I don't have much of a plan yet. Just figured I'd come here and see what happens. Could be something useful. Could just be another bad idea."

His eyes flick toward Maarten, then down to the glass. His thumb stops against the nick in the rim, and for a moment he seems to weigh something before straightening slightly. "Actually, if I'm going to be coming back, you might want to make the next one cheaper." He takes a drink, too quickly. "Regular customer. Good for business."

The words hang there. Arno's eyes drift toward the bottles, then back to his glass. Whatever argument he had prepared seems to have abandoned him halfway through. He gives a small shrug and settles back into the stool. "Never mind. Just thought I'd ask."

Image of Skin and Figura Model: (PLACEHOLDER!!! I CANT DO SKINS!!) skin artists hmu??)

Hello, I'm Moony and I'll be handling your application. So far you're on the right track. I even think the skin you're looking to use currently looks good. However, you'll need to make a few edits since your character is actually in The Southern Reach. The server's story takes place there, south of The Wall.

If you have any questions feel free to let me know! I'm also available through Avalore's Discord, if not here.

thanks for the correction!!

"I wanted to see somewhere else, Maarten." He pauses, then gives the smallest shake of his head. "That's not quite right. I wanted to get out. Out of the swamp, I suppose."

He takes a drink, his mouth twisting briefly at the taste. "You spend enough time up there and everything starts to look the same. Water, mud, more water. Same paths, same people, same places you already know how to get lost in. You get used to it, though. That's the dangerous bit. After a while you stop noticing what would have bothered you before."

His thumb worries at a nick in the glass as his gaze drifts toward the door, then the windows, then back to the bar.

"I grew up in the swamp, north of here. South of the Wall, though. Swamp country." He gives a small shrug. "You learn which ground is lying to you, which water won't leave you sick, which people smile because they're friendly and which ones smile because they aren't."

He looks down at his drink.

"My people have a saying. Don't remember it exactly. Something about a frog leaving the pond and finding out the whole world is wet." A faint smile pulls at one corner of his mouth. "Seems about right."

He settles deeper into the stool, crooked as ever.

He lifts his drink again but does not immediately drink from it. His gaze drifts toward the window, toward the Spire.

"I don't have much of a plan yet. Just figured I'd head south and see what happens. The Spire seemed as good a place as any to start." He pauses. "There's more here than there was back home. More people. More places. More things I don't already know."
