Aralei is the firstborn child of Omalen (father) and Inaleth (mother) Stardreamer. She was born in the Duchy of Rulan on the 8th of Skybright. Her father was a stonemason and her mother worked in a nearby vineyard to make their living. Her two younger siblings, Cyrn and Trena, were born when Aralei was 10 and 14, respectively, essentially relegating her as the "third parent" in the family. As a child, her parents made some effort to teach Aralei each of their trades, and while she always caught on quickly, they could tell her heart was never quite in it. They always said her head was in the clouds, that she was never quite paying complete attention despite doing exactly what she was told, and quickly.
When she came of age at 18, she insisted that she was meant for greater things than stones, dirt, and grapes. She wanted to become a scribe, and eventually, a librarian.
Aralei studied hard to become a librarian, in Mariza. She was born with a wicked-fast intellect and an undying hunger for everything mysterious and unknown. In school, she learned all about the Valkian Realm. She had memorized the genealogy of the King-Emperor to the 14th generation, both the maternal and paternal branches. And she had learned about The Enemies, the Aedall. But being a family of elves living mere inches from the wall, she couldn’t help but wonder about her ancestry; she wondered if, and when, her ancestors gave up their home to the south and their culture for the only life that she now knew. She had to find out.
She knew about The Great Disappearance even before she got a formal education on it. Kids she played with, townsfolk she saw every other day, would talk about moving somewhere far away and vanish. They were moving South, but Aralei never really understood why people were leaving. But it wasn't until she started learning about the history that she started to understand the significance. The Aedall were gone, and no one knew why. Aralei wanted to find out.
The day she told her father and siblings that she was going south of the wall didn't go well. Everyone cried. It was devastating for everyone, especially Aralei. Inaleth had passed away three years prior, and although the family had adjusted, nothing ever felt quite right or complete without her. And now Aralei was leaving. As much as she wanted to stay, she felt an undeniable calling to the South. She promised to send what money she could for her family, and write letters whenever she could, but even with those promises, leaving was difficult.
She gave the family a couple months to adjust, and for her to gather up enough savings and supplies for the long journey. But much to even Aralei's dismay, the day for her departure came, and she left.
