Mage Application

Players interested in becoming a mage, please read the arcane mechanics page and the initiation page.

As the people of the Spire establish, so too do the patrons that have taken to the location—their underlings, other potent mages or arcane entities, have also become more established, prevalent, and known.

Followers of Facet draw near to answer the call and uphold their own oaths, pawns of Ciren’na shuffle about in her grand game, and the arrival of Myo signals, to some, great turbulence on the horizon. The Fey Coterie stakes their claim too, summoned by and sometimes luring prospective mages, offering the arcane in the form of a Fey deal. A new player, the voidspawned Dreaming One, maneuvers her own marionettes throughout the Reach and beyond.

Magic is no longer confined to the overtly magical; it becomes more and more spread amongst the people that pursue it.

Please note:

  • Characters should be at least a week old before making a mage application; this is just to make sure they have a chance to settle into the world. You will want something to talk about to interest your patron!
  • Characters should be aged 14 or older to attain magic.
  • Mages must wait at least one month between rank-up requests.
  • It is highly encouraged that you create a mage card for your character in the Arcane subforums for ease of tracking your progress.

Characters may discover and learn magic through two main paths: Patronage, the direct influence of a patron and their underlings, or Apprenticeship, tutelage under a fellow mage. Over the course of their journey through magehood, some may even weave between the two paths. Once a patron and conduit (the method of initiation) are picked out, fill out the form below and reply to this thread! A member of Lore will reach out to arrange an encounter with your desired patron or their retinue. Those that seek magic through another player character (Apprenticeship) must still reply to this thread.

Conduit options are thus:

  • Patron: Entails a direct meeting with the patron. Not all patrons are available for initiation, this will be listed on their page. Typically takes the longest to set up.
  • Underling: Entails a meeting with a member of the desired patron's retinue. Quicker turnaround.
  • Mentor: Entails an apprenticeship to an existing mage character of Level 3 or above. No DM involved. Even if you have fully set-up this route, please post it and open a Lore ticket for the initiation.

Spoiler

Khari has operated with a sense of self-deluded confidence in himself that has unfortunately  found him in compromising, reckless positions- backfiring in traumas he could have never expected. His nightmares rest in the hellish point of his life where he was severed from those he trusted with the feelings of betrayal, forced to save himself, and to fend for himself in foreign lands. Those events re-played enough in his mind every time he closed his eyes to the point that he had to turn the emotions of those traumatizing events into anger, into fuel.

He did not attempt to sit idly and put the event behind him or accept that the person he felt responsible was beyond his reach. He carried that fury across the lands towards The Spire. It became his purpose, pursuing vengeance because doing nothing would have felt worse than any consequence that pursuit could’ve brought. Khari would be open enough to share stories of these feelings and nightmares with The Dreaming One if they attracted her attention.

The same intensity shapes the rest of his life, as well. Khari wears his emotions on his sleeves and seeks thrills that will get his adrenaline rushing. He takes chances others would likely avoid, and rarely denies himself an opportunity simply because it may end badly for him. To him, a life spent guarded, restrained, wallowing in self-pity, and untouched by risk is hardly a life to live at all. He would rather live fast, die young in the pursuit of all his desires.

The Dreaming One may take great interest in recognizing Khari to be a persistent chaser of dreams, motivated by nothing else but the hopeful and/or fearful emotions that reside in making them a reality. He has to have something to believe in. No matter the odds, he will do anything to manifest his hopes for the fear of being without them would be too much to live without. Whether the dream and hopes are distant, dangerous, or dismissed by others as impossible, he will pursue it until he reaches it or exhausts every path available to him, and even then he still wouldn’t give them up. With the Dreaming One’s aid, it would allow Khari to dream more, to reach further, and turn his ambitions into reality.

That gift would also not end with Khari. His optimism and willingness to act would make him equally likely to throw himself behind the hopes of others. He would use such gifts to empower people to pursue their dreams instead of letting them remain as such and help guide those through their fears and nightmares that seemed impossible to overcome. The Dreaming One may find appreciation in seeing more dreams come to life and more nightmares and tragedies revealing strength rather than demise, and that is something Khari will facilitate in the world, if invested by her.

Spoiled for Find Out In Character information

For those who are nosey, Ichor is the school (Since that is pretty public information), all else is find out IC for Baidu please!

Spoiler

Character Name:Baidu

Date of Character Creation: 01JUL26

Desired Patron: Myo

Desired Conduit: Patron

Mentor: N/A

Primary Branch: Ichor

Desired Patron Cantrip: Archive

Desired General Cantrip: Purify

What is your pitch to your patron? Why should they give you magic? (connect with what they value!):

Baidu feels like Myo is the only that aligns with him. He himself is a young budding scholar who is seeking ways to help others via medicine, alchemy, and basic knowledge. He wishes to go out and explore with others, being a reliable individual who is there to aid in any endevor. He is not a warrior or fighter himself, nor is he a truly noble person like knights of the sort. But that does not mean he wishes to truly help others in his own way.

He understands that having Myo as a Patron would have the expectation of Sacrifice for the greater good, and he is willing to do just that, if hesitant. Baidu isn’t one to rush into anything, it is why he has asked about the various magics, the various patrons, the ways to acquire magic and the pros and cons with each.

It is why he came to this conclusion of being under Myo and choosing Ichor as his primary magic branch. He was offered Initiation three times, but felt like if he is going to do magic, he wishes to do it right and fully commit. No half assing. Once he takes this step there is only the end in sight for him. And with that comes his choice of desired magic:

Ichor is the magic of the body, the ability to help keep others alive who can have the largest impacts upon this world, as well as allow him to dabble further into alchemy and grow his own plants to create and experiment.

What is your pitch to your patron? Why should they give you magic? (connect with what they value!): (Leave blank if logging Apprenticeship)

They had spoken before and she had shared her interest in magic. The reason for this, is to fulfill her desire of igniting her flame even brighter even if that means to change. She seeks to find a purpose and thinks that the Mother can help her as she had offered a hand. She just has to figure out at what cost.

Spoiler

Morgan Madoc has no interest in power for its own sake.

If anything, he has seen and experienced first hand what it means to have power without any of the accountability and responsibility that one is required to have in order to use it properly, to use it well. He knows what it means to have it, to help and choose not to, and what that those without power pay the price for it.

And that is what sparked his interest for Myo in the first place.

The idea of magic not being a reward, but rather a responsibility, is something Morgan understands. After mutating, he used the strength it provided him to live selfishly, until everything he loved was ripped out of his life in a single moment, caused by the lifestyle he chose to lead prior to arriving in the Spire. Ever since then he's decided that if he is going to be given power capable of changing people's lives, then he believes there ought to be a reason behind doing it. Not for glory, nor wealth. Not because he believes he was destined for it. But because somebody needs help.

Truth is, Morgan is still trying to navigate what it all means, what he's meant to do, how he can do better. But one thing that is for certain is Myo's philosophy of the Greater Good appeals to the part of him that refuses to stand by when he could have done something. And the willingness to sacrifice is something Morgan understands intimately.

All of this to say, the root of Morgan's entire philosophy as Cob-Web revolves around one simple question; if you have the ability to stop something terrible from happening, what gives you the right to simply walk away?

Character Name:  Uriah

Desired Patron: The harvest reaper

Desired Conduit: Patron

Mentor: (Leave blank if not pursuing Apprenticeship)

-

Primary Branch: Ether

Desired Patron Cantrip: Seed of Chaos

Desired General Cantrip: Celestial Brush

-

What is your pitch to your patron? Why should they give you magic? (connect with what they value!):

-

For a girl with such a deep history in the land around her, Uriah has very often failed to understand the deep cyclical nature rooted in life itself. In her life she has seen chicks hatch from eggs, she has watched deer bound across fields of open plains, and she has mourned the death of those she holds most dear. The latter is what nearly broke her.

‘I don’t want to see you go’ was a phrase that became so engraved into Uriah’s mind after her lover passed. It tore apart everything she knew about the world around her and for a time, corrupted her into this deeply selfish, selfloathing creature.

In her selfishness, she left behind nearly all that reminded her of that life she once knew. She went west, far west past the tall mountains and over the running rivers. On this trail she slowly began to see the utter beauty in the life around her. Her egotism slowly melted with the ice of the winter months, blossoming into this deep curiosity, love, and care for the land she walked with.

In a way, this is why she found the story of The Harvest Reaper to be so much more appealing now more than ever. A being who, as she has learned to mirror, values the land and all its wondrous cycles, even the unpleasant ones.

With little more than a wagon, a guitar, and a little bit of help, she believes that maybe she can become a greater part of that cycle.

Character Name: ARNO

Desired Patron: Ciren'na
Desired Conduit: Patron

Primary Branch: Force
Desired Patron Cantrip: Emotion Bridge
Desired General Cantrip: Wild Magic

What is your pitch to your patron? Why should they give you magic? (connect with what they value!):

Spoiler
Arno is not cruel for cruelty's sake, nor because he particularly despises the people around him. He simply never developed much reverence for the rules that others seem to accept as the natural order of things.

He learned early that the world does not care for fairness. He watched how things worked. Predators pursued the weak. The strong took what they could. Those unable to defend themselves were pushed aside, and those who could not fit into expectations were shunned and treated as problems to be corrected. He was taught, in one way or another, that there was a proper way to exist. There were things a person was supposed to want. Ways they were supposed to behave. Lines they were not supposed to cross. Desires to be swallowed. Instincts beaten in submission. The world had its rules, and those who refused it were trampled. Arno wasn't an exception.

Weak for much of his life, and weakness, he learned, was something the world forgave not, so he denied the world back with the honesty of a wild beast. With pure, brutal force.

He desires strength over all. To be the absolute peak of strength, not so he could trample on others, but to never be trampled on again. He wants the ability to take hold of his life with overwhelming force that no one can decide what happens to him. He wants to seize the gains the world withheld from him, even if he cannot comprehend what those gains are. If there is a door that has always been closed, he does not want someone to open it for him. He wants to become strong enough to tear the entire wall down.

Arno would not approach Ciren'na because of her magicks, nor because her philosophy particularly speaks to him. He would approach because she is powerful. That is enough. Power attracts him in the same way fire attracts a moth.

If she were to recognize the ambition in him and offer him something, he would simply accept it. Or he'd try to wrestle it from her hands by force. Albeit unwise. He'd die trying nonetheless.
